Hillary Younglove

About this speaker

Hillary Younglove is a Bay Area artist and educator. 22 years ago, she embarked on a two - year project to explore the history and trends in African and African American hairstyles. She photographed women in New York, D.C and the Bay Area, which led to further exploration into the history behind what she sees as sculptural works of art adorning women’s heads. This exploration developed into a series of oil paintings and the design of a book with the culmination of a multi- media show at the African & African American Historical and Cultural Society Museum at Fort Mason in San Francisco. One of the images from the series was used for a European book cover for Toni Morrison’s, “A Mercy”.

.

Hillary has taught at the San Francisco Academy of Art University and through the extension programs at UC Santa Barbara and UC Berkeley before becoming a founding instructor at Sonoma Academy where she developed the visual arts program, and now serves as head of the Art Department. Her personal work spans from alternative photography to puppet making to fresco and encaustic painting. She has been published in the New York Times, Atlantic Records, Essence Magazine and more. Hillary has exhibited nationally and internationally. She holds a BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design and an MA from NYU and studied at ICP.
