Pelo Malo Y Pelo Bueno: Afro Latinas Who Rose Above
A Talk by Carmen Bardeguez-Brown , Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa and MK Chavez
About this Talk
Afrolatinas learn about good and bad hair valuations through communication from adults, peers, and males—very often, from their own family members. Hair valuations tend to elevate White beauty standards and devalue hair textures common among Afrolatinas. Many women are challenging this pelo malo idea out of frustration regarding the erasure of Blackness within Latinx communities. Hear from four Afrolatinas who rose above the psychological process of indoctrination, brainwashing, and internalization of the destructive, divisive pelo malo y pelo bueno construct.
