About this Talk
In 2019, the very fact that then-Senator Holly J. Mitchell (CA) had to draft and sponsor legislation like the CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) reveals the longstanding hegemonic triumph of a dominant Eurocentric beauty ideology. California was the first state to draft and pass this anti-discrimination law. Since that time, nearly 30 other states have introduced some variant of this bill. Learn about and discuss the provisions of this bill that “ensure[s] protection against discrimination in the workplace and schools based on hairstyles, by prohibiting employers and schools from enforcing purportedly ‘race-neutral’ grooming policies that disproportionately impact persons of color.”
