Race, Stigma, and the Politics of Black Hair
A Talk by Kim Coleman Foote , Sulma Arzu-Brown , Kuukua Dzigbordi Yomekpe MA, MTS and Judy Juanita
About this Talk
Since the period of Black enslavement in the Americas, diaspora people have used their bodies as canvases upon which to articulate their presence as subjects. Our natural hair—constantly in motion, searching for recognition and appreciation—is one of those canvases. Hair’s connection to beauty, and its intersection with race and gender, places a particular burden on Black females whose naturally kinky hair textures are low on beauty continuums. This panel will discuss current topics and trends surrounding the stigma and politics of natural hair.
